The Study of the Visual Arts at Bucknell
The faculty of the Department of Art and Art History believe that the fusion of creativity and critical thinking learned through studying the visual arts is essential to the lives of students. In a world where visual communication has begun to supersede the written word an understanding of the visual arts gained by the creation of art and through the study of art history is an essential component in a well-rounded contemporary education. Our studio courses, which have been at the forefront of active learning since their inception, foster creativity, self-expression, and inventive problem solving. Through our art history courses students encounter and understand the art and architecture of a diverse array of past and present cultures. The visual literacy that all our courses foster enhances the critical skills of our students enabling them to understand, enjoy, and contribute to a world where images and image-based technologies are becoming increasingly important.
